THE JOYS OF MOTHER AND DAUGHTER JOURNEYS
Mother-Daughter Tours have become a rapidly growing phenomenon within women-only tours. Some women are traveling with their teenage dau
ghters, others with their 70 year old mothers. All, regardless of their age, benefit from the experience of traveling together, as they create lifetime memories, get beyond their roles in the family and discover "a whole new person" that such journeys reveal.
When my daughters, Emily and Sara were toddlers, the playground was our world. A few years later, they proudly joined me at work for the "Take Your Daughter to Work Day". We didn't start traveling to Europe until they were almost teenagers, but from the first trip I saw what a huge value travel was, not only toward their education and their world-view, but also for our, admittedly not always perfect, relationship. Traveling together, we were communicating on an adult level and our adventures gave us the opportunity to appreciate each other as equals, without the pre-defined roles of mother and daughter. Being away from home, in different surroundings made me see my daughters in a completely new light. They amazed me and I felt so proud of them. I witnessed their mature responses, their responsible behavior, their curiosity and their humbleness towards other cultures, those traits that are revealed by experiencing a different culture. This was when I knew for sure that I needed to make this experience available to more women.
To learn about our mother's or our daughters' inner life, we need many opportunities to talk. Being away from the everyday reality and the endless chores provides time and space where we can really express ourselves. We do not talk about dishes that need to be cleaned or a boss that needs to be dealt with, we talk about what this landscape makes us think about, about what touches us within a work of art, or about memories that a dish brings back. The journeys that we take together are to the center of ourselves and to the center of our relationship, and the memories we create are cherished for the rest of our life. Few things are more rewarding than traveling with your mother or your daughter, so whether you go by yourself or come with us, make sure you do it soon.
Sights and Soul Travels' first experience with Mother-Daughter tours went far beyond our expectations.
